How safe are your medical records? Are you sure?

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

It’s a bit startling to consider, but we began blogging about the relative safety of medical records over 5 years ago:

"In a time zone 17 hours ahead, a radiologist in Australia, working for a company called NightHawk Radiology Services, had been sitting before the same images."

More recently, we noted that the MVNHS© had put the kibosh on their latest and greatest:

"A plan to create the world’s largest single civilian computer system linking all parts of the National Health Service is to be abandoned by the Government"

The Brits were unable to justify the huge sums of money already sunk into that doomed effort, let alone throwing in even more. But there’s a more pressing issue than just funding: just how safe is the information being stored in these data warehouses?

Why so serious, Henry?

Well:

"Until recently, medical files belonging to nearly 300,000 Californians sat unsecured on the Internet for the entire world to see … Among the files were summaries that spelled out, in painstaking detail, a trucker’s crushed fingers, a maintenance worker’s broken ribs and one man’s bout with sexual dysfunction."

More ooopsies.

Our co-blogger Kelley B (herself a Certified Medical Office Manager), has told me that the gummint has in place special funding …

Saturday With The Dogs

Sunday, August 14th, 2011

Woke up with a headache. That is always bad. Fed the dogs, took a sinus pill and managed to sleep in until 9:30. Then I had to chase my dog around and get a harness on her, eat a quick breakfast and then it was off to pick up a friend’s dog and take them to the adoption event. It was a rather slow day at the event. Not a lot of adoptions but there were 2. I just went to get my foster dog more used to being around other dogs and people. She did pretty well. At least she didn’t hide the whole time.
I was supposed to do some laundry when I got home but the bugs are really bad outside so I will try again tomorrow. Someday I will have indoor laundry. How nice that will be.
I picked a new series to watch on Hulu.com. I was too young to watch Hill Street Blues when it first ran but I remember the hype about it. There are 3 seasons to watch so it should keep me entertained for a while. …

Figure Out Which Model This Maytag Oven Is

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Timothy, as he describes it, is in a pickle. His Maytag oven started flashing "F5" and turning itself off whenever he turned it on. When the Maytag guy came over, he couldn’t figure out which model number it was and so he couldn’t repair it. "He asked for $130 for this useful piece of service, which I refused," writes Timothy. Can you, dear Consumerist reader, identify which model this Maytag oven is? With that information, Timothy will be able to get his oven fixed so he can make things like cakes and roast chickens. A Google search says that the… …

Reasons Why You Probably Can’t Count on a Mortgage Tax Deduction

Monday, August 8th, 2011

The government provides the public with a vast array of tax-based incentives to go out and acquire property, but folks tend to get carried away with notions of government generosity. One of the more commonly inflated expectations of the American tax code is the value of the mortgage tax deduction. For many Americans, it’s a [...]Thank you for subscribing to the RSS feed. Web Analytics Firm, 20 Clients Sued For Web Tracking

Thursday, August 4th, 2011

There’s big business in tracking web browsing, and temptation to grab more information than is legally acceptable. A lawsuit alleges a web analytics company and its clients stepped over the line in snooping on browsing habits, particularly of those who try to cover their tracks. Wired reports the suit (PDF), filed by a group of lawyers in California, alleges the firm and its clients, which include AOL’s About.me and music streaming service Spotify, ran afoul of federal and state privacy laws with their tracking practices. The suit alleges that defendants re-created cookies after users deleted them. The analytics firm tells… …
